Safety Data Sheets

Data sheets are the main source of information about substances and mixtures in the supply chain. They provide information about threats, including environmental threats, and contain suggestions regarding security. Requirements regarding preparation of data sheets are defined in the Reach Regulation – Title IV “Information in the Supply Chain”, art. 31. As of May 20, 2010, Annex II to the REACH Regulation was substituted by Commission Regulation (EU) No. 453/2010. This legal act determines general requirements and specifies the format of data sheets in detail.

In the case of substances registered in REACH, information provided in data sheets has to comply with information contained in the Chemical Safety Report (CSR). In particular, this refers to Exposure Scenarios, which form attachments to the sheets (e-SDS) and which describe conditions in which a substance can be used safely.
